Rectory School Learning Center

Rectory School Learning Center

After years of planning and an aggressive 12-month construction schedule, the new Rectory School Learning Center opened its doors this spring.  The new building provides Rectory with much needed educational space and includes an elementary school on the first floor and a second-floor tutoring center.  Both levels of the building are connected to the existing J.B. Academic Building, providing students with a seamless transition between educational spaces.  Elementary school classrooms and tutoring rooms were previously scattered across campus making coordination between grades and teachers less than ideal.  The new Learning Center consolidates these functions and provides Rectory with a state of the art educational environment.

The design of the building takes its cue from a classic schoolhouse with its main gable roof and large center cupola but with a more contemporary overall style. The building forms and details were kept simple and familiar for the younger elementary school students and to remain in keeping with Rectory’s traditional New England style campus architecture. The abundance of windows and open floor plans on both levels provide a bright, natural light filled environment.

New Store Designs For The Shops At Mohegan Sun

New England Design had the pleasure of working on three new specialty shops at Mohegan Sun Resort Casino in the past year. All three are now open.

Once Upon A Time Toys

Imagine a time before malls and big box chain stores took over the toy world with nothing but mass produced merchandise, a time when there was that little specialty toy shop created by a local merchant with a lifetime passion for his work and an appreciation for toys both past and present.  Once Upon A Time Toys is a store that transports you from this world to the dream state of childhood, to a universe of treasures with a cross-generational selection of carefully hand-picked toys of the past and present in an environment which one enters a dream-like state right out of a child’s storybook.  A place to celebrate childhood dreams, amongst multitudes of characters in a stylish atmosphere that bridges a mix of traditional, antique, and modern day collections for all of you small and BIG kids.

A Ferris wheel rotates with buckets of toys, trains run overhead through the clouds while rockets prepare for takeoff and kites and airplanes soar among the planets.  At the balconies are C.S. Lewis inspired doors in the clouds, each opening for you to experience a different whimsical dream world as you discover unexpected entries into various worlds where animals congregate and entertain, butterflies and fairies exist with their fluttering twinkle star-filled wings while dangling a star overhead, hot air balloons take toys for rides and marionettes perform theatrical productions.

This exciting, highly themed toy store was done as a collaboration with design consultant Nick 606, Inc.  The themed specialty elements were fabricated by ARTfx and Burke Enterprises and the millwork was fabricated by East Construction.

Clay Pipe Cigar Shop

The Clay Pipe Cigar Shop was designed not only as a place to buy cigars but also as a gathering place for cigar aficionados.  The store beckons back to an era when things moved more slowly and people took the time to enjoy a good cigar.  The retro-industrial styling with built-in mahogany humidors, plush leather seating and large ceiling fans provides the perfect setting to sit back and relax with friends, a drink and a smoke.  The furniture, light fixtures and ceiling fans are from Restoration Hardware and the built-in millwork and zinc countertops were provided by Pierre Marchand Architectural Millwork.

Everything Under The Sun

This design for this new store involved the complete remodel of a small, outdated and awkwardly shaped retail space.  Everything Under The Sun sells a wide assortment of Mohegan Sun logo apparel and gaming gifts and, as the name implies, practically anything else a visitor may need so a great deal of display space was required in a very small area.  Backlit cherry display cabinets in an espresso finish with metallic laminate back panels line the walls and provide a strong, sophisticated backdrop for the merchandise.  Cherry plank floors and cable suspended glass and satin nickel led pendants help give this updated retail space a more upscale feel.  All of the built-in millwork was provided by Pierre Marchand Architectural Millwork.
